Frequently Asked Question
(FAQ)

What is a District Cooling System?

A District Cooling System (DCS) produces chilled water at a central plant and distributes it to several buildings. The water travels through a network of insulated underground pipes to provide air conditioning. This setup removes the need for individual chillers or cooling towers at each site.

The central plant uses industrial-grade chillers to cool water. This water is pumped through a closed-loop pipe network to heat exchangers located in each building. The exchangers transfer the cooling to the internal air conditioning system. The warmed water then returns to the central plant to be chilled again.

DCS lowers electricity consumption and operational costs. It frees up space on rooftops or in basements because individual cooling equipment is not required. Centralisation also simplifies maintenance and increases equipment reliability.

Central plants operate at higher efficiency levels than smaller individual units. They use thermal energy storage to produce chilled water during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower. This reduces the overall peak demand on the national power grid.

Yes. Centralised management reduces the total refrigerant charge needed for an entire district. It also lowers carbon emissions because the system consumes less power than traditional cooling methods.
